Schools from pre-nursery to higher education in Mauritius
From pre-nursery to higher education, choose the best international school for expat kids in Mauritius.
Having children should not hold you from moving to Mauritius – quite the opposite! Its geography, climate, facilities, multilingualism, and diverse cultures make it a fantastic location for children to thrive.
As a parent of toddlers, you will feel at ease knowing that the island's modern health-care system and qualified medical professionals are ready to handle any medical emergencies. And with the cost of labour being relatively low, childcare is affordable.
How to find the right school?
While public schools are open to all, most foreign residents enrol their children in international or local private schools (secular or religious) or alternative schools. As many parents, alumni and members of the teaching staff can testify, Mauritius has a number of high-quality schools. Children benefit from small classes, a wide range of activities and a broad perspective on the world… In these schools, children of various nationalities grow up alongside Mauritians and dual nationals.
Here are the most important points to consider when choosing a school in Mauritius.
The school's region
In Mauritius, many children spend several hours each day commuting to school, particularly at the secondary level. As a result, many parents choose their place of residence based on the schools their children attend, or will attend in the future.
Understanding the school’s curriculum and accreditation
Choosing a curriculum is crucial for your child, as it will determine their final qualifications and options for higher education.
Most curriculums offered in Mauritius come from the following organisations:
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Cambridge International Education
- Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE)
- International Curriculum Association (ICA)
- British National Curriculum
Check the accreditations of the schools you are interested in; they may offer a curriculum from an organisation in certain grades only or prepare students for exams from other curriculums as options.
The School fees
The quality of private education in Mauritius comes at a price. Each school sets its own tuition fees and payment terms, and most offer preferential rates for large families and when at least one parent is a Mauritian (or French, in the case of French schools. If your child will be spending several years in Mauritius, take into account the overall cost of their education based on the chosen curriculum.
Education fees can vary widely and tend to increase with each grade level. At international private schools, annual tuition ranges from Rs 100,000 to Rs 325,000 for Mauritian citizens and from Rs 125,000 to Rs 530,000 for children of foreign residents. Additionally, there are enrolment fees between Rs 20,000 and Rs 75,000, along with expenses for the cafeteria, school bus, uniforms, and school supplies.
